Brazilian filmmaker to debut 3-panel “IMMERSION” art installation/documentary film at 709 Penn Gallery on April 24th thru May 23rd

Adriana Babinski will unveil her film entitled, “Immersion” at 709 Penn Gallery on April 23rd.  Babinski spent 4 weeks in China, 6 weeks in Brazil.  The film also included footage shot in Washington DC and Pittsburgh.

Babinski categorizes the piece as a  “Mirrored” documentary art installation.  The final work actually represents 3 films focusing on each country. Each work will be projected simultaneously and individually on 3 panels. The filmmaker intends the audience to be immersed in this visual information arena. Says Babinski, “I like the idea of exploring the ‘sense’ of urban people as they conduct their everyday urban lives and deal with urban events.  There are obvious differences in the people that I filmed, but I discovered compelling similarities as well in the time I filmed in the 3 countries.  Common Grounds but worlds apart.”  At this time of culture crises Babinski’s work personifies our ethical, religious and economy divides. This piece is an uplifting reminder of our collective oneness. “In a world where people are often divided by borders of geography, race, economics, religion and politics, it is easy to lose sight of what we all have in common”, Babinski says.

The shoot was both a challenging and enlightening one for the filmmaker.  She dealt with language issues in China and with natives who were at times more interested in taking her photo than vice versa.  Says Babinski, “They were staring at me, especially when I had my camera.  Body language got me through the language barrier!”  In Brazil, she stumbled upon an arrest and Police threatened to confiscate her camera unless she stopped shooting.  “They were arresting 3 guys for some reason.  I got the arrest on film but they weren’t happy about it.  It was a little scary but I’m glad I got it.”
